Sex Trafficking
My first planning is of sex trafficking and how they treat young children as sex objects and how it's awful. I originally planned on just painting a portrait of a father and a daughter, or what it seems to be. She was going to secretly have a barcode tattoo and possibly some hickies but they just look like a normal father and daughter. I now discovered a few artists who have inspired me to take a risk and do some collaging. As of right now I am using mixed media and I have a 12x 18 canvas stretched.
So when I started painting this piece, I painted did an under painting of an image of a father and a daughter and I thought "Hmm this isn't enough." After, I made it smaller. I then painted it on each end of the canvas flipped over, sort of like a playing card. I did not intentionally make it look like a playing. I honestly was trying something different. I then Added a bar code on the one black and white's face to draw attention to the concept of sex trafficking. I wanted the sides to be balanced but slightly different.
I gave this a break and moved on. I then came back to this over Thanksgiving break and got some images to spice it up a bit. Since it was too balanced, I wanted it to contrast a bit and try to communicate more through my work. Gesso was used to make the paintings of the people to be pushed back a little more so I can ass some figure lines. I honestly believe this piece isn't well done and can use a lot more work but I need to just walk away for a little because I believe that each side contrast and the piece unifies as one.
Trans will Not be Erased
Second idea I am planning is a collage with a portrait of a trans man or woman. This is a movement piece of the trans will not be a erased issue with Donald Trump and the other republicans as you can see I started doing more research on that top in my notebook as well as researched sex trafficking
As I was collaging a few tweets and such from Donald Trump and some #wontbeerased, I also place a gender restroom sign of and I wanted to make two figures, a man and female instead of doing a figure painting.
The idea of making it biblical was brought up as well and I liked it! So you know what I did? I made some symbolism happen.

This is the final outcome and I did a lot of brainstorming on this one. I had to due to the open space. I put streaks of rainbow in here because Transgenders are part of the lgbtq+ community anf that contributes a bit but I chose this pink and this blue for a main reason. The transgender flag is made up of these two colors so I tried to make them represent male and female as well. I chose a blue snake to represent a penis and two pinkish apples to represent breasts. I tried to balance the colors out on the painting so it was too pink or too blue.

Domestic Violence
My third idea is to use photos that I will take, and to create a collage of a a hand grabbing on to a women's neck, while he tries to kiss he. I will use photographs because painting faces is a weak spot for me.
I changed my idea completely. Instead of doing a photograph collage, I did an image transfer of the statistics of domestic violence in the USA today. Then I was placing a man standing there as a girl sits in fear in the fetal position. I did not realize, during the image transfer, that they would be all backward. I then used a king size sharpie to rewrite everything the appropriate way.

I do not have any progress images , but as you could see, I used acrylic paint on an 8'' x 16'' canvas. I gesso-ed over the stats lightly, then began a sketch of the person and the man. I had the person and man originally and it seemed too bare. I wanted to distract the person who sees this piece with a more happy feel. That is why added the yellow. Happiness appears to be all around but the man standing is all black and he is intended to bring fear. The figure was to also show the feel of the situation.
This was a difficult one because I did research to find that domestic violence is always hidden. I couldn't find a way to make anything hidden so I had to take a risk with the yellow. I want to attract global awareness to the painting and realize that everything around may appear happy but it's not as happy as you think.
Update: I re-did this whole painting and used the rule of thirds to remove the figure from the center of the canvas. The original one was too much to look at.

I realized that this was a total disaster so I put gesso over it. I re did it using the rule of thirds and wrote facts on it. Then I placed gesso mixed with water over the words. That was to show the words behind but hide them at the same time.
Drug Abuse/ Usage
So I haven't thought too much about this one but I am trying to be obvious with my pieces so I am thinking of having a young child swinging or playing in a sand box, and them being near a needle or something related to drugs and heroin.
For this one, I've struggled with this severely. I had to take breaks from planning because I struggled a good bit. I picked a canvas I used before for this and started painting what I felt in the moment. I wanted to use my planning ideas and try to come up with a good way to put this out. I painted a guy swinging at first and noticed it needed something. I then painted a dead man with blood dripping from his head and a handful of pills. Then I painted the arm with a needle and that was a mistake. I had assistance from MaClay on this and i took a risk by letter gesso over my piece.
this is my final piece and it didn't change much but I am going to leave it like this because it is telling a story as is. I put emphasis on the person swinging and made that the focal point of the painting. I believe that it communicates and tells a story. I believe it could be better but right now I'm going to let it live.
Feminism
Technology Overuse
I want to prove a point how now-a-days, society is so caught up in electronics it is seemed to be so looked up to, it's like their religion.
I wanna put Jesus on a Facebook symbol to show that as the people below take pictures of it. The problem is, I do not want to make it just Jesus, I want to show the constant faceless figures to show how it could be anybody. I came up with the idea to collage different parts of people's bodies together to form one |
HIV / Aids
To show this topic, I just want to show that it's okay. When I did research, it was mostly common in homosexuals which is okay so I wanted to paint two men kissing, as they're being wrapped around the ribbon that represents HIV/Aids.
I had blood in this sketch to touch it up, but that is bad so we cancelled that
I placed them in the center and the black is balanced. I am solving my problems by how am I going to make this workout because I don't know yet.
If I could change anything of the final turnout, it would be to do more deatail and use more pigment or blue colors.

Religious Conflict
For this topic, I discovered by reading about the religion issues over in other countries and how it was hard. I wanted to make a piece on how religion is shown in my Point of View. I believe people are viewing religion more as a weapon than a belief. The torturing in other countries is what lead me to the idea of showing it. The painting I intended was to have a person, use their symbol as a weapon killing the against religion
decided to separate the four religions with lines and make each one its own area I added the dead dove in the center to represent the death of peace. I am not a huge fan of this piece. I feel that it could use more detail and I wasted more time on research instead of painting. |
